Abstract

Anxiety disorders represent one of the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide, necessitating the exploration of holistic and culturally relevant interventions that complement conventional pharmacological treatments. Within Islamic sources, the colour green occupies a prominent symbolic position in both the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions, often associated with nature, tranquillity, blessings, and the rewards of the Hereafter. Nevertheless, its potential psychological significance and therapeutic value remain underexplored in hadith studies. This study aims to examine the significance of the green colour in the textual corpus of Sahih al-Bukhari and to evaluate its potential role as a non-pharmacological element for anxiety management. Employing a qualitative document analysis approach, thirteen hadith narrations containing references to the colour green were identified and analysed through thematic coding and contextual interpretation. The findings reveal that twelve narrations convey predominantly positive connotations, encompassing themes of clothing, household objects, natural landscapes, gardens, vegetation, green carpets, and metaphors related to faith and wealth, while only one narration presents a negative connotation associated with physical suffering. Overall, the symbolism of green in these hadith texts consistently reflects notions of life, serenity, spiritual security, divine blessing, renewal, and eternal felicity. When integrated with contemporary psychological literature, these findings correspond with empirical evidence demonstrating that exposure to green environments and green visual stimuli promotes relaxation, emotional regulation, physiological calmness, and reductions in anxiety-related symptoms. The study argues that the recurrent positive representation of green within Prophetic discourse may provide a conceptual foundation for developing culturally grounded chromotherapeutic interventions within Muslim communities. Consequently, the integration of hadith-based symbolism with contemporary psychological insights offers a promising interdisciplinary framework for advancing non-pharmacological approaches to anxiety management, although further empirical investigation is required to establish causal therapeutic effectiveness.
