Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Submission Guidelines

  1. New authors must register for an account on the journal’s website before submitting a manuscript.

  2. After logging in, authors should complete the online submission form, select the appropriate article category, and upload the required files. All author details and manuscript information must be complete and accurate.

  3. Manuscripts must be submitted in editable Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).

Author Guidelines

  1. Scope: Manuscripts must fall within Quranic and Sunnah studies or related disciplines. The journal also welcomes research on technology, multimedia, education, human development, and other fields examined from Qurʾānic and Sunnah perspectives. Submissions should demonstrate a clear scholarly contribution.

  2. Language: Manuscripts may be written in Arabic, English, or Malay. Authors are responsible for ensuring linguistic accuracy, clarity, and consistency.

  3. Originality: Manuscripts must be original, must not have been published previously, and must not be under consideration by another journal. All listed authors must have approved the manuscript and agreed to its submission.

  4. Scholarly Conduct: Manuscripts must present evidence-based arguments in a respectful and academically responsible manner. Sensitive or contested issues should be addressed with scholarly rigour, appropriate contextualisation, and due consideration for individuals and organisations. Derogatory language and unsupported allegations are unacceptable.

  5. Manuscript Length: Manuscripts must contain 8,000–10,000 words, including text within tables, figure captions, notes, and references, but excluding the abstract and keywords. Manuscripts outside this range may be returned for revision or considered at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

  6. Abstract: Each abstract must contain 250–300 words and clearly summarise the research objective, methodology or analytical approach, principal findings, and scholarly contribution. Abstracts should be self-contained and must not include citations or undefined abbreviations.

  7. Responsibility for Content: The views and interpretations expressed in published articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the journal’s Advisory Board, Editorial Board, management team, or publisher. Authors remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of their work.

Style and Format

  1. Font and Spacing: Use Times New Roman, 12-point, for Latin-script text and Traditional Arabic, 16-point, for Arabic or Jawi text. Apply 1.5-line spacing throughout. Paragraph formatting and overall presentation should follow the journal’s manuscript template. These journal-specific formatting requirements take precedence over APA’s general manuscript-layout recommendations.

  2. Title and Author Information: Provide the manuscript title, the full names of all authors in the intended publication order, and each author’s institutional affiliation and address. Clearly identify the corresponding author and provide an email address and contact telephone number. Author information should be supplied on a separate title page to facilitate anonymous review.

  3. Reference List and Transliteration: Present all reference-list entries in Latin script. Sources published in Arabic or other non-Latin scripts must be romanised using a consistent academic transliteration system, with English translations of titles in square brackets where required by APA 7th edition. Ensure that bibliographic details accurately identify the sources consulted.

  4. Title, Abstract, and Keywords: Each manuscript must include a title, an abstract of 250–300 words, and no more than seven keywords, in both Arabic and English. Malay-language manuscripts must also provide these elements in Malay. Titles, abstracts, and keywords must convey equivalent information across the required languages.

  5. Tables and Figures: Embed tables and figures within the manuscript near their first discussion in the text. Number tables and figures separately and consecutively using Arabic numerals, and refer to each in the main text. Provide clear titles, captions, source acknowledgements, and explanatory notes where appropriate. Tables and figures must be legible and formatted consistently with APA 7th edition. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material where required.

  6. Citations and References: Follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). Use author–date in-text citations and provide a complete reference list at the end of the manuscript. Include page numbers or other appropriate locators for direct quotations. Provide DOIs and URLs where applicable under APA guidelines. Footnotes may be used sparingly for substantive explanations but must not replace the author–date citation system.

  7. Qurʾānic and Hadith References: Identify Qurʾānic passages by surah and verse number. Where translations are quoted, identify the translation used. Hadith citations must identify the collection and hadith number, where available, together with any additional locator needed to identify the passage accurately. Reference-list entries must identify the editions or translations consulted and follow APA 7th edition as applicable.

Authors retain the copyright for all articles published in Maʿālim. Articles are licensed under an open access Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, enabling free downloading and reading of the paper by anyone. Furthermore, the article may be reused and quoted, provided that proper citation to the original published version is included. These terms facilitate maximum utilization and exposure of the work, while ensuring appropriate credit to the authors.

In rare cases, articles may be subject to alternative licensing conditions. If you have specific requirements, such as those related to funding, which preclude the use of this license, please communicate this to the Maʿālim Managing Editorial. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the publisher.
