The Pumpkin Tree in the Quran: An Interpretive Analytical Study

This research presents a discussion and a study of the views of both earlier and later Quranic exegesis (tafsīr) scholars regarding the meaning of the pumpkin tree in the story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) and the verse: “And We caused a tree of pumpkin to grow over him” [As-Saffat:146]. The study explores the wisdom behind the growth of this tree in particular and not others, noting the variety of interpretive opinions on the matter. It also discusses what contemporary scholars and specialists in plant science and nutrition have said about it, revealing the health benefits of pumpkin, which reflects aspects of the unseen knowledge that Allah has revealed to us in the Quran. The researchers adopt an inductive, analytical, and comparative methodology. The research concludes by discussing the various opinions, providing the author's own preferred view, and concludes that the intended meaning of yāqtīn refers to the pumpkin. Noting the similarity in the characteristics and benefits of the gourd family and highlighting the scientific miracle in this verse.
