Abstract

The science of tajwīd serves as a fundamental discipline to ensure that every Quranic verse is recited with the correct makhraj (articulation points) and ṣifāt ‎‎(characteristics), thereby preserving the authenticity of the revelation as inherited through the mutawātir tradition from Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). In the Malay world, this scholarly tradition has been empowered by local ulama through the production of intellectual works that act as a bridge between classical Arabic texts and the understanding of the local community. One significant pioneering figure in this field is Shaykh Abdul Mukti bin Shaykh Mohammad Soleh al-Kelantani. He is the author of the Mir’āt al-Qur’ān fī Tashīl Ma‘rifah Aḥkām al-Tajwīd (1779M), which is recognized as one of the earliest tajwīd works written in the Malay language in this region‏.‏ This paper aims to explore the intellectual contributions of Shaykh Abdul Mukti by focusing on the methodology of composition and the pedagogical approaches employed in the work. Specifically, this study analyzes the systematic structure of the twelve main chapters, the use of naqlī (scriptural) evidence, and the application of practical tajwīd rules. Utilizing a qualitative approach based on textual and philological analysis of the original manuscript, this study examines the content structure, visual presentation styles, such as the use of rubrication (red ink), and the scholarly arguments presented‏.‏ The findings reveal that Shaykh Abdul Mukti successfully integrated traditional talaqqī and musyafahah (face-to-face learning) approaches with a systematic structure that is easily accessible to the general public. The uniqueness of this work lies in its ability to simplify complex Arabic technical terms into classical Malay, establishing it as a highly valuable scholarly heritage in the history of Islamic education in the Nusantara. This study further suggests that the text be elevated through contemporary technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), to preserve the tajwīd heritage of Malay scholars in the digital era‏.
