Work Ethics in Islam: A Qurʾānic and Prophetic Framework for Professional Integrity and Institutional Excellence

الملخص

Work ethics occupy a central position in the Islamic moral worldview, where labour is not merely an economic activity but a form of responsibility, worship, social contribution, and trust before God. In the contemporary context, marked by administrative inefficiency, weakened institutional trust, and recurring ethical challenges in professional environments, the Qurʾān and the Prophetic Sunnah offer a foundational framework for rethinking workplace conduct through revelation-based values. This study aims to analyse the principles of work ethics in Islam as derived from the Qurʾān and authentic Prophetic traditions, and to examine their relevance for strengthening professional behaviour, organisational culture, and institutional performance. Methodologically, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by examining selected Qurʾānic verses and sound hadiths related to work, responsibility, justice, trust, excellence, sincerity, and social accountability. These texts are analysed through the interpretive insights of classical tafsīr literature and authoritative hadith commentaries, with a view to deriving ethical principles applicable to contemporary professional settings. The findings reveal that Islamic work ethics constitute an integrated and multidimensional ethical system comprising four interrelated dimensions: personal ethics, professional ethics, social ethics, and institutional ethics. These dimensions are grounded in core values such as amānah, ṣidq, iḥsān, ʿadl, ikhlāṣ, masʾūliyyah, discipline, and fulfilment of obligations. The discussion argues that these values do not function as abstract moral ideals alone, but as operational principles capable of enhancing accountability, transparency, productivity, mutual respect, and trust within institutions. The study concludes that a Qurʾānic and Prophetic framework of work ethics provides a robust moral and practical foundation for addressing contemporary workplace challenges and for cultivating professional integrity, institutional excellence, and sustainable organisational reform.
