Sūrah Yūsuf occupies a distinctive position within the Qurʾānic corpus due to its comprehensive narrative structure, profound theological themes, and rich moral and pedagogical dimensions, which have long attracted scholarly attention. While previous studies have primarily emphasized its aesthetic and narrative excellence, limited attention has been given to a systematic hadith-based evaluation of its merits (faḍāʾil) and distinctive properties (khawāṣ). This study aims to critically examine the hadith corpus related to Sūrah Yūsuf, with particular focus on authentic narrations that articulate its virtues and unique characteristics, alongside a rigorous assessment of weak and fabricated reports attributed to it. Employing an inductive approach, relevant hadiths were collected from classical sources and contemporary hadith databases, followed by an analytical methodology to evaluate their chains of transmission, textual integrity, and inferred meanings. The findings reveal that, contrary to widespread assumptions, there is no explicitly authentic hadith that specifically establishes the virtues of Sūrah Yūsuf; rather, its merit is subsumed within broader classifications of Qurʾānic chapters, particularly among the Miʾīn. Furthermore, many widely circulated narrations concerning its khawāṣ are demonstrably fabricated or lack credible transmission. Nonetheless, authentic reports and athār indicate its profound spiritual impact, especially as a source of consolation, moral formation, and reinforcement of tawḥīd, sabr, and tawakkul. The study argues that a critical hadith-based reassessment is essential to purify the discourse surrounding Qurʾānic virtues from unfounded claims, thereby aligning devotional practice with sound Prophetic guidance. This contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the maqāṣid of Sūrah Yūsuf and underscores its enduring relevance as a source of ethical and spiritual cultivation grounded in authentic Islamic scholarship.
