A Maqāṣid Al-Qurʾān-Based Conceptual Framework for Contemporary Thematic Hadith Research

Contemporary hadith studies continue to grapple with an enduring epistemological tension between the riwāyah-oriented emphasis on textual authenticity and the dirāyah-oriented pursuit of contextual understanding, often resulting in fragmented interpretations of the Sunnah that are disconnected from the higher objectives of revelation. This challenge has limited the capacity of hadith scholarship to function as a dynamic and holistic framework for addressing contemporary societal issues. Accordingly, this study aims to develop a conceptual framework for thematic hadith research grounded in Maqāṣid al-Qurʾān, positioning it as an integrative epistemological foundation capable of reconciling the methodological divide between riwāyah and dirāyah. Employing a qualitative research design, the study utilises conceptual analysis and extensive library research, drawing upon classical and contemporary works on thematic hadith methodology (al-Hadīth al-Mawḍūʿī) and the discourse of Maqāṣid al-Qurʾān, particularly the maqāṣid framework articulated by Ibn ʿĀshūr. The analysis adopts a thematic approach to synthesise methodological principles and construct a coherent research model. The findings propose a four-stage conceptual framework comprising thematic hadith identification, contextual analysis of transmission and socio-historical circumstances, maqāṣid mapping based on the overarching objectives of the Qurʾān, and normative synthesis aimed at producing purpose-oriented interpretations. The study further demonstrates that Maqāṣid al-Qurʾān functions as a comprehensive epistemological lens that transcends literalist readings by uncovering the wisdom, objectives, and ethical dimensions embedded within Prophetic traditions. This framework contributes to the methodological renewal of contemporary hadith studies by transforming thematic hadith research from a predominantly descriptive enterprise into a purposive and integrative analytical model. It further enhances the relevance of the Sunnah as a normative and contextual guide capable of addressing modern intellectual, social, economic, and governance challenges while remaining firmly anchored to the overarching objectives of divine revelation.
