The classification of Qur’anic sūrahs into Makkīyah and Madanīyah represents a foundational discourse in ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān, particularly in relation to structure, style, thematic orientation, and the tracing of Qur’anic maqāṣid. While these thematic criteria have long been employed to determine the identity of disputed sūrahs, their possible application to the classification of Prophetic traditions remains underexplored in Hadith studies. This study aims to examine the functionality of the thematic criteria of Madanī sūrahs as an analytical framework for identifying and classifying Madanī hadith, thereby extending the discussion of Makkī and Madanī beyond Qur’anic studies into the domain of Sunnah scholarship. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative design based on library research, document analysis, thematic content analysis, comparative analysis, and semantic inquiry. Classical and contemporary works in Qur’anic sciences, tafsīr, Hadith classification, Asbāb wurūd al-Ḥadīth, and related chronological studies are analysed to identify points of convergence between Madanī Qur’anic themes and Prophetic traditions situated within the Madinan phase. The findings indicate a significant relationship between the thematic criteria of Madanī sūrahs and Madanī hadith, particularly in themes such as communal consolidation through faith, exposure of hypocrisy, engagement with Jewish communities, legal legislation, family law, transactions, governance, jihad, and judicial regulation. The study argues that these criteria may serve as useful qarāʾin for tracing the historical and thematic context of selected hadiths. It further demonstrates that classifying hadith according to Makkī and Madanī phases can enhance contextual understanding, support the study of Sabab wurūd al-Ḥadīth, and contribute to discussions on al-Nāsikh wa al-Mansūkh and the gradual development of Islamic legislation.
