The Methodology of Exegesis Between Imam Sufyan al-Thawri and Imam Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah: A Comparative Analytical Study of Surah Ibrahim

This research seeks to examine the methodologies of Athari (tradition-based) and Raʾyi (opinion-based) exegesis as reflected in the interpretations of the distinguished scholars Sufyan al-Thawri and Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah, with a focused application on Surah Ibrahim as a case study. Surah Ibrahim was purposefully chosen due to its profound significance, as it encapsulates comprehensive objectives and compelling arguments, making it an exemplary model for the application of both interpretative methodologies to Quranic verses. The study commences by elucidating key concepts relevant to the research including exegesis, methodology, Athar (tradition), and Raʾyi (opinion) from both linguistic and terminological perspectives. It subsequently offers a concise introduction to both scholars, coupled with an analysis of their scholarly contributions and interpretive approaches. The research adopts an inductive, analytical, and comparative methodology. The findings indicate that both Sufyan al-Thawri and Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah were among the Tābiʿ al-Tābiʿīn (successors of the successors) in the second century of the Hijri calendar, and they were widely esteemed for their reliability and leadership in Islamic jurisprudence and scholarship. Moreover, the study underscores that Quranic exegesis during their era was distinguished by a harmonious integration of narration (riwāyah) and reasoning (dirāyah), a characteristic that is clearly manifested in their respective interpretations.
