The Methodology of Muḥammad Salīm Muḥaysin in Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt: An Analytical Study of Sūrah al-Baqarah in Al-Mughnī fī Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt al-ʿAshr al-Mutawātirah

Abstract

Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt occupies a central position in Qur’anic studies by explaining the linguistic, grammatical, rhetorical, and interpretive foundations underlying variant Qur’anic readings. Despite the significant contribution of Sheikh Muḥammad Salīm Muḥaysin to this discipline through his work Al-Mughnī fī Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt al-ʿAshr al-Mutawātirah, limited analytical studies have examined the methodological principles governing his approach to tawjīh al-qirāʾāt. This study aims to identify the principal features of Muḥaysin’s methodology, analyse the types of evidences and interpretive mechanisms employed in explaining variant readings, and evaluate the extent of his reliance on linguistic reasoning in Sūrah al-Baqarah. Employing a qualitative research design, the study adopts an inductive-analytical approach through content analysis of selected instances of tawjīh found in Sūrah al-Baqarah. Relevant examples were extracted, classified, and analysed according to linguistic, grammatical, rhetorical, lexical, and exegetical dimensions. The findings reveal that Muḥaysin’s methodology is predominantly grounded in linguistic and grammatical analysis, with frequent reference to the original usages of Arabic, tribal dialects, and established grammatical principles. His interpretive framework is further strengthened through citations from Prophetic hadith, Arabic poetry, classical lexicographical sources, and the opinions of earlier scholars of qirāʾāt and Arabic linguistics. The study also demonstrates his tendency to correlate variant readings with their linguistic origins and rhetorical functions, thereby preserving their authenticity within the broader framework of Arabic expression. These findings highlight the systematic and interdisciplinary nature of Muḥaysin’s approach and underscore its contribution to understanding the interpretive foundations of mutawātir readings. The study contributes to contemporary qirāʾāt scholarship by providing a clearer understanding of Muḥaysin’s methodological framework and its significance in the analysis and teaching of Qur’anic variant readings.
